What is NIN & Why JAMB Needs It (2026 Rules)

NIN stands for National Identification Number.

It is an 11-digit unique number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to every Nigerian citizen and legal resident from age 0 upward.

Think of it like your permanent ID for life — once issued, it never changes.

Example NIN: 20394857261

Why Does JAMB Require NIN for 2026? (Official Reasons)

JAMB made NIN 100% compulsory starting from 2020, and the rule is stricter in 2026. Here’s why:

Reason	Explanation
Stop Exam Malpractice	NIN links your biometrics (fingerprints + face) to your JAMB profile. No more impersonation.
Unique Identity	Prevents multiple registrations using fake names or details.
Track Candidates	JAMB & NIMC share data to verify O’level results, age, and state of origin.
Admission Accuracy	Universities use NIN to confirm your JAMB result and Post-UTME details.
Government Policy	FG mandates NIN for all national exams (JAMB, WAEC, NECO).

Official JAMB Statement (2025/2026):
“No candidate will be allowed to register for UTME or DE without a valid NIN.” – Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar
